Wengen — Car-Free Charm and the Lauberhorn Under the Eiger
Home to the world's longest downhill race, with Eiger views and a village that time (and cars) forgot.
Wengen sits on a sunny shelf above the Lauterbrunnen valley, with the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau as its permanent backdrop. No cars, a cog railway from the valley floor, and the Lauberhorn — the world's longest and most famous downhill race. This is classic Switzerland.
Getting There
Fly to Zurich (ZRH) or Bern (BRN), then take the train to Interlaken Ost and change for the Bernese Oberland Railway to Lauterbrunnen, then the Wengernalp Railway up to Wengen. Total journey from Zurich: about 2.5–3 hours. There's no road access — the train is the only way in.
Where to Stay
Hotel Regina and Beausite Park Hotel offer old-world elegance. Sunstar Hotel Wengen is solid mid-range with pool and spa. Budget travellers should look at Airbnb apartments — sleeping four from CHF 120/night. The village is small enough that everything is walking distance from the train station.
On the Mountain
The Jungfrau Ski Region covers 213km of piste across Wengen-Kleine Scheidegg, Grindelwald-First, and Mürren-Schilthorn. Wengen's home terrain is centred on Kleine Scheidegg and Männlichen — wide intermediate cruisers with jaw-dropping Eiger views. The Lauberhorn run (4.5km, 1,028m vertical) is open to the public and an absolute must.
Where to Eat
Restaurant Eigernordwand at Kleine Scheidegg has the most dramatic lunch spot in skiing — directly beneath the Eiger north face. In the village, Da Sina does great Italian, and Hotel Schönegg's restaurant serves traditional Swiss fare with views.
Local Insider Tips

- Take the Jungfraujoch excursion (3,454m) on a rest day — it's touristy but extraordinary.
