Beginner's Guide to Val Thorens — Where to Stay & Ski
Everything a first-timer needs: green runs, budget tips, and the best après spots.
At 2,300m, Val Thorens is Europe's highest ski resort — and one of the most beginner-friendly in the Three Valleys. This guide covers everything a first-timer needs to know for the 2025/26 season.
Why Val Thorens for Beginners?
Val Thorens sits at a snow-sure altitude that guarantees conditions from November through May. The resort has invested heavily in wide, gentle green and blue runs served by modern high-speed lifts. The dedicated beginner area near the Roc de Péclet chair is free to access and ideal for first-timers finding their feet.
Getting There
The nearest airports are Geneva (GVA, 3h 30m) and Lyon (LYS, 2h 30m). Chambéry (CMF) is the closest at just 1h 45m but has fewer flights. From the UK, Geneva is the most popular choice with daily easyJet and BA flights.
Where to Stay on a Budget
Val Thorens is a purpose-built resort, so everything is ski-in/ski-out. The best value is in self-catered apartments near the Caron lift area. Expect €70–120/night for a studio sleeping 2–4 people. Hotel Trois Vallées offers solid 3-star rooms from €90/night.
Best Beginner Runs
- Plein Sud — wide green run with incredible views, gentle gradient
- Moraine — sheltered blue run, perfect for building confidence
- Pionniers — the free beginner area near the village centre
Après-Ski for Beginners
Val Thorens is famous for its party scene but there's plenty for a relaxed après too. La Folie Douce at the top of the Plein Sud gondola is an experience everyone should have at least once — DJs on the terrace from 2pm. For something quieter, Le Viking does amazing mulled wine with mountain views.
