Obergurgl-Hochgurgl — Austria's Snow-Sure Secret at 2,000m
Austria's highest parish, guaranteed snow, and zero queues. The Ötztal gem nobody queues for.
Obergurgl-Hochgurgl sits at the very end of Austria's Ötztal valley — literally the last village before the Italian border. At 1,930m it's Austria's highest parish, and that altitude means one thing: rock-solid snow from November through April. If you're after uncrowded pistes, reliable conditions, and proper Austrian hospitality, this is it.
Getting There
Innsbruck airport (INN) is just 90 minutes away, and transfers run like clockwork. From the UK, Jet2 and easyJet fly direct to Innsbruck from several airports. If you land in Munich, the drive is around 3 hours but incredibly scenic through the Brenner Pass.

Where to Stay
Obergurgl is compact — everything is ski-in/ski-out or a short walk. The village splits into two: Obergurgl (slightly bigger, more après options) and Hochgurgl (quieter, higher, right on the slopes). For families, Obergurgl's centre is ideal. For ski-in convenience, Hochgurgl's TOP Hotel is legendary.
On the Mountain
112km of pistes split across two linked ski areas connected by the TOP Express gondola. The terrain is wonderfully varied: gentle blues for families, wide cruising reds around the Festkogel area, and genuinely challenging blacks off the Hohe Mut for advanced skiers. The Kirchenkarbahn sector is brilliant for intermediates — long sweeping runs with views across to Italy.
What makes Obergurgl special is the crowd factor: even in peak February, you rarely wait more than 2 minutes for a lift. The ratio of beds to piste kilometres is one of the best in the Alps.
Where to Eat
- Nederhütte — The après-ski institution. Live music from 2pm, decent food, and a crowd that knows how to party without the chaos of St Anton.
- Hohe Mut Alm — Mountain restaurant with 360° panoramic terrace at 2,670m. The Tiroler Gröstl here is outstanding.
- Belmonte — For a proper sit-down dinner. Italian-Austrian fusion that somehow works perfectly.
Local Insider Tips
- The ski pass covers both Obergurgl and Hochgurgl — take the TOP Express over to Hochgurgl for at least one day, the runs back down are superb.
- Don't skip the free Ötztal bus to Sölden if your pass includes it — it's only 20 minutes away and adds 144km of extra terrain.
- Obergurgl shuts down relatively early (10pm most places). If you want later nightlife, you'll need to head to Sölden.
- The village pharmacy doubles as a sunscreen shop — altitude UV here is brutal, even on cloudy days.
- Book the Hohe Mut summit restaurant for sunset — the views across to the Dolomites on a clear evening are unforgettable.
