Mürren — James Bond's Ski Resort and the Most Dramatic Views in Switzerland
Piz Gloria, the Eiger, and a car-free village perched on a cliff. Mürren is pure Alpine drama.
If Wengen is the stately neighbour, Mürren is the wild one — perched on a cliff edge 1,650m above the Lauterbrunnen valley, accessible only by cable car and mountain railway. The Schilthorn summit (2,970m) starred in a James Bond film, and the views of Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau are the most dramatic in the Alps.
Getting There
Fly to Zurich (ZRH) or Bern (BRN). Train to Interlaken Ost, then Lauterbrunnen. From there, take the Stechelberg cable car or the BLM funicular-and-train combo to Mürren. No roads reach the village — that's the whole point.
Where to Stay
Hotel Eiger is the classic choice — wood-panelled rooms with Eiger views and a cosy bar. Hotel Alpenruh sits right at the Schilthorn cable car station. For budget, Hotel Blumental offers simple rooms at good prices. Self-catering apartments are limited but available through local agencies.
On the Mountain
Mürren's own ski area (Schilthorn) offers 54km of piste from 1,650m to 2,970m. The terrain suits confident intermediates and advanced skiers — the long black Inferno run (15km to Lauterbrunnen) is legendary. With the Jungfrau Ski Region pass, you can also ski Wengen and Grindelwald (213km total).
Where to Eat
Piz Gloria, the revolving restaurant at the Schilthorn summit (yes, from On Her Majesty's Secret Service), is a must. The 007-themed experience includes a Bond exhibition. In the village, Stägerstübli does excellent fondue, and Hotel Eiger's restaurant serves refined Swiss cuisine with views.
Local Insider Tips
- Ski the Inferno run to Lauterbrunnen at least once — 15km and 2,170m vertical. Take the train back up.
- The annual Inferno race (January) is the world's longest downhill — amateur entry is possible if you register early.
- Mürren is tiny — book restaurants for dinner in peak weeks or you'll struggle to find a table.
- The Allmendhubel flower trail is beautiful even in winter for a gentle walk with panoramic views.
