Leysin — Affordable Swiss Skiing With Sun, Families, and Lake Geneva Views
A sunny terrace above the Rhône valley with gentle slopes, a cog railway, and Swiss prices that don't sting.
Perched on a south-facing balcony above the Rhône valley with views to Lake Geneva and the Dents du Midi, Leysin is one of Switzerland's most affordable ski options. Popular with families and international school students, it offers gentle terrain, genuine Swiss village life, and sun that shines from morning to late afternoon.
Getting There
Fly to Geneva (GVA), just 1.5 hours away. Take the train to Aigle (1 hour from Geneva), then the charming cog railway up to Leysin — a 30-minute ride through vineyards and forests. The cog train itself is half the fun.
Where to Stay
Hotel Classic is well-located and good value. Central Résidence has solid apartments near the lifts. For budget options, hostels and B&Bs are available from CHF 50/night. The village is compact and walkable, so location matters less than in bigger resorts.
On the Mountain
Leysin itself has around 60km of gentle to intermediate terrain up to 2,200m. The Leysin-Les Mosses-La Lécherette combined area reaches 100km. Terrain is mostly blues and easy reds — ideal for learners and improving intermediates. The Kuklos revolving restaurant at the summit of the Berneuse offers 360° panoramic views.
Where to Eat
Kuklos at the summit is unmissable — a revolving restaurant with views from Mont Blanc to the Matterhorn. Le Leysin serves Swiss classics at honest prices. On the slopes, the Mayen snack bar has great tartiflette and glühwein.
Local Insider Tips
- The Magic Pass covers Leysin and dozens of other Swiss resorts — at CHF 459 for the season, it's incredible value if you ski more than 7 days.
- Leysin's south-facing aspect means brilliant sunshine but can make snow soft by afternoon. Ski the higher runs after lunch.
- Take the cog railway one stop further to Les Mosses for quieter, more varied terrain.
- The Leysin Tobogganing Park is great fun for families on a rest day.
