Lech — The Arlberg's Elegant Side With World-Class Skiing
Where Austrian royalty ski. The White Ring circuit, powder bowls, and five-star hospitality on the Arlberg.
Lech am Arlberg is the elegant side of Austria's most legendary ski area. While neighbouring St Anton is famous for its après-ski chaos, Lech offers the same 305km of world-class Arlberg skiing with a quieter, more refined atmosphere — think fur-lined boots, Michelin-starred dinners, and the Austrian imperial family's favourite ski holiday.
Getting There
Fly to Innsbruck (INN, 1.5 hours) or Zurich (ZRH, 2.5 hours). From Innsbruck, drive west via the Arlberg Pass or take the train to Langen am Arlberg, then a 20-minute bus. Friedrichshafen airport (FDH) on Lake Constance is another option at just 1.5 hours.
If you're travelling as a group and want to explore other Ski Arlberg resorts such as St Anton, Zürs, or Warth, it's well worth renting a car — or two if you're a bigger group. Having your own wheels gives you the flexibility to ski different valleys each day and makes the most of the 305km interconnected area.
Where to Stay
Hotel Gasthof Post is the iconic choice — traditional Arlberg luxury. Aurelio's Hotel & Spa is the contemporary alternative. Hotel Monzabon offers great mid-range value. Lech has a strong apartment rental market too — Oberlech (a car-free satellite village at 1,700m) gives true ski-in/ski-out access.
Alternatively, you can stay in Wald am Arlberg, approximately 27 minutes by car or 33 minutes by train from Lech. Wald offers great rental flats that can accommodate up to 8 people — a smart option for larger groups looking to save on accommodation while staying within easy reach of the slopes.
On the Mountain
Ski Arlberg is Austria's largest linked ski area — 305km of piste connecting Lech, Zürs, St Anton, St Christoph, Stuben, Warth, and Schröcken. The White Ring circuit is the headline — a 22km loop through Lech, Zürs, and Zug that's one of skiing's great day trips. Lech's home slopes are beautifully groomed, with excellent intermediates off the Rüfikopf and powder bowls above Zürs.
Where to Eat
Griggeler Stuba at Burg Vital holds a Michelin star and offers creative Alpine cuisine. Fux restaurant is outstanding for a refined dinner. On the mountain, Balmalp in Zürs has a legendary sun terrace, and the Rud-Alpe above Lech serves traditional Käsespätzle you'll dream about.
Local Insider Tips
- Ski the White Ring circuit clockwise early on a weekday — quieter lifts and better light on the Zürs side in the morning.
- Oberlech is car-free and connected to Lech by an underground funicular — consider basing yourself there for pure convenience.
- The Arlberg has exceptional natural snowfall (over 7m annually) — combined with snowmaking, conditions are almost always superb.
- Book a mountain guide for the legendary Valluga off-piste descent from 2,811m — it's guide-only terrain and worth every euro.
