Kitzbühel — Medieval Charm Meets the World's Most Famous Downhill
The Hahnenkamm, cobbled streets, and legendary nightlife. Kitzbühel is Austria at its most glamorous.
Kitzbühel is Austria's most famous ski town — a medieval walled city with cobblestone streets, world-class skiing, and the Hahnenkamm: the most feared and celebrated downhill race in alpine skiing. It's glamorous without being pretentious, and the skiing is far more varied than the TV coverage suggests.
Getting There
Fly to Innsbruck (INN, 1.5 hours), Salzburg (SZG, 1.5 hours), or Munich (MUC, 2 hours). Kitzbühel has its own train station with direct connections to all three cities — making it one of the most accessible major resorts in Austria. No car needed.
Where to Stay
Hotel Tennerhof is a Relais & Châteaux gem with spa and gourmet restaurant. Hotel Zur Tenne occupies a 14th-century building in the old town. Pension Schmidinger is a great budget option near the Hahnenkamm gondola. The old town has beautiful apartment rentals above the shops — romantic and convenient.
On the Mountain
KitzSki covers 170km of piste across the Hahnenkamm and Kitzbüheler Horn sectors, plus links to Jochberg and Kirchberg. The terrain is predominantly intermediate — wide, well-groomed reds that are a joy to cruise. The Streif race course is open to the public (it's a black run and humblingly steep). The KitzSki pass also covers a day in SkiWelt (one of Austria's largest areas).
Where to Eat
Kupferstub'n at Hotel Zur Tenne does refined Tyrolean cuisine. Chizzo is the nightlife hub with good cocktails and pizza. On the mountain, Sonnbühel Alm has outstanding Kaiserschmarrn (the fluffy Austrian pancake). Seidlalm on the toboggan run combines dinner with an après-ski sledge ride down.
Local Insider Tips
- Visit during Hahnenkamm race week (late January) for the electric atmosphere — but book accommodation months in advance.
- The Streif is open to recreational skiers — try it early morning when it's freshly groomed for a confidence boost.
- Kitzbühel's old town is worth a full rest-day exploration — medieval walls, boutiques, and cafés with Sachertorte.
- Take the S4 Fleckalmbahn to Kirchberg for a quieter, sunnier day of skiing with fewer crowds.
